Reading through the Kansas City Star’s weekly hunting report this morning and things are looking up. Recent rains and colder weather should help bring in some ducks for Arkansas and Mississippi’s opening weekends toward the end of the month.
Kansas City Star Hunting Report
Missouri waterfowl
•FOUNTAIN GROVE: 5,000 ducks (a mix of species). Hunting has been fair. Habitat is excellent.
•SWAN LAKE: 42,000 ducks (30 percent mallards).
•SQUAW CREEK: 56,000 ducks (40 percent pintails).
•BOB BROWN: 5,900 ducks (30 percent gadwalls, 25 percent teal). Hunting has been good. Good water, food, habitat conditions.
•GRAND PASS: 41,000 ducks (a mix of species). Hunting has been good. On Oct. 30, 49 hunters took 159 ducks.
•FOUR RIVERS: 10,500 ducks (60 percent mallards). Hunting outlook is fair. Poor water conditions. Units 3 and 2B have best water.
•SCHELL-OSAGE: 12,000 ducks (half mallards); 1,000 Canada geese. Pool F is full and C is nearly full, other areas have poor water.
•MONTROSE: 250 ducks. Poor water conditions. Poor hunting outlook.
•OTTER SLOUGH: 20,000 ducks (mix of species); 150 geese. Normal water conditions.
•DUCK CREEK: 6,800 ducks (mostly pintails, mallards). Hunting outlook is good.
Kansas waterfowl
•CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 110,000 ducks (mostly gadwalls, teal, shovelers); 25,000 geese (mostly whitefronts); 60,000 sandhill cranes. Hunting has been good to excellent. Hunters are averaging 3.3 birds per person.
•MARAIS DES CYGNES: 6,000 ducks (mix of species). Hunting has been fair. Water conditions are fair but improving. Units A-East and G have best water.
•NEOSHO: 4,300 ducks (half teal). Hunting has been fair.
•FLINT HILLS: 500 ducks. Water has been poor.
•PERRY: 6,000 ducks (a mix of species). Kyle and West River marshes have offer best hunting opportunities.
•TUTTLE CREEK: 1,500 ducks (mix of species). Fair water conditions. Black Vermillion marsh has offered best hunting.
•MILFORD: 4,000 ducks (mostly mallards and wood ducks). Most of the ducks are using Smithbottom and Martin-Beichter marshes.
•QUIVIRA: 40,000 ducks (half mallards); 47,000 geese (whitefronts and Canadas); 300,000 sandhill cranes. Area is closed to hunting while whooping cranes are using pools.
•MELVERN: 1,500 ducks (mostly mallards, gadwalls, teal). Willow Marsh has the best water.
•CLINTON: Less than 500 ducks (mostly teal); 50 Canada geese. Poor water conditions.
•HILLSDALE: 1,500 ducks (mix of species). Poor water conditions. Antioch Marsh has the best water.
•KIRWIN: 100,000 ducks (half mallards); 1,000 dark geese. Big migration moved in Tuesday. Water conditions still poor.
