Police rescued a Lake Ronkonkoma man after his boat overturned while he was duck hunting in Bellport Bay Sunday.
According to Suffolk County police, 24-year-old Michael Mandello was attempting to retrieve a decoy at approximately 9:35 a.m. when high winds overturned his 15-foot aluminum duck boat, throwing him into the 37-degree water.
Officers pulled the Mandello from the water and brought him to a waiting ambulance at the Smith Point Marina, said police. He was treated at the scene for exposure.
Authorities said Mandello had not been wearing a life jacket.
According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics, boaters face the highest risk of dying in boating accidents during the winter months. The window of opportunity for rescue is only a few minutes if the involved person is not dressed for the water conditions. Nearly 90% of boating fatalities are due to drowning and nearly half of those are attributed to the effects of immersion in cold water.
