I added a couple of articles from Louisiana and Texas newspapers on their early duck season. It looks like some have had decent seasons. If you have water you have birds. But Something hit me as I was reading Shannon Tompkins piece in the Houston Chronicle. The article talks about the number of mallard and teal, but also adds that there are a lot of Ring Necks and Scaup on the coast and hunters are actaully averaging 5 ducks per day in some of these areas. I know there are there a lot of opinions on shooting ducks and my opinion you have a couple of types of hunters:
1. The mallard purist – those who are insistant on only taking mallards and mostly those with greenheads.
2. The duck hunter – a hunter who just enjoys the sport, has a good time shooting no matter the conditions or type of duckThese folks down in south Texas are definitely duck hunters. Now don’t get me wrong I would rather have a full bag of big mallard ducks anyday, but if I have a chance to get a limit, have some fun, or teach a young hunter about hunting I am gonna do it. There is nothing wrong with being a “mallard purist” if that is what makes you happy, but for just give me something to shoot at. Besides some of these are ducks are a lot of fun to shoot at and will really test your shooting skills at times.
I’d be happy to hear your comments so leave some feedback.
