Waterfowl seasons bring surprises
Duck hunting takes flight, but snow geese still looking for liftoff

Amonth ago, many Texas waterfowlers anticipating the Nov. 5 start of the 2005-06 duck and goose seasons figured they knew what waited down the road.

Goose hunters were salivating.

Duck hunters were just hoping things didn’t get any worse.

Rumors swirled that snow geese had pulled off a tremendously successful nesting season — talk was of record-setting numbers. And all those gray-backed juvenile snows alleged to be heading south would make this one of the best goose seasons in years.

Duck hunters looked at the numbers and the condition of local wetlands and shook their heads. Things looked less than encouraging.
