Waterfowlers enjoy opener in ‘wet’ Delta – The Clarion-Ledger

Bobby Cleveland has a piece on opening weekend of duck season at the Clarion Ledger.
Benoist said hunting low-water conditions at the brake he hunts near Isola made the trip to the blind as tough as, well …
“It was hell,” he said. “At normal water levels we can all get in boats and paddle all the way. Friday, we had to put the equipment and dogs in the boats, and, then, using paddles and pushpoles as walking canes, we had to drag the boats 150 yards across ankle- to mid-calf-deep mud to get to 6-inches of water so we could get in the boats.
“It was hellish, having to go through 12 to 18 inches of silt, but it was worth it.”
On Friday, the 24-duck limit was about a 40/40 mix of gadwall and mallards, with the rest filled by green-wing teal and wood ducks. On Saturday, surprised at the number of mallards, the group was more selective and got its allotment of mallards (16).
